Chinese think tanks gave U.S. eight pandemic-related ‘Global No. 1’ titles, Weibo users adding their own, also with questions

While the Chinese government and media have been doubling down on their conspiracy theory of a lab leak involving the U.S. Fort Detrick, three Chinese think tanks released on Aug. 9 a joint report titled "'America Ranked First'?! The Truth about America’s fight against COVID-19." The three think tanks are Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies of Renmin University, Taihe Institute, and Intellisia Institute.

Seizing on and refuting a Bloomberg’s story back in June that gave the U.S. No. 1 position in a monthly Covid Resilience Ranking, the Chinese report had five parts: America’s partisan fight, anti-science measures, system failures, social gap, and destruction of global pandemic resistance. Never mind that Bloomberg in its July story said, “The U.S.’s reign as the best place to be in the Covid-19 era was short-lived.”

Based on the report, the authors gave the U.S. eight global No. 1 titles: No. 1 failed country in fighting Covid; No. 1 scapegoating country; No. 1 Covid spreading country; No. 1 politically divided country; No. 1 currency over-issuing country; No. 1 pandemic turbulence country; No. 1 disinformation country; and No. 1 origin-tracing terrorism country.
