With Taliban takeover of Afghanistan faster than expected, Chinese netizens say U.S. collapsing sooner than expected
With the sudden fall of Afghanistan, China’s media had a field day. Xinhua declared “The fall of Kabul rings death knell of American hegemony” and that it marked America’s failure of its twenty-year war, the collapse of its international reputation, and the last twilight of its empire. Global Times chimed in with its editorial “U.S. stumbles as Afghan situation cycled in 20 years,” stating that this defeat was a clearer demonstration of U.S. impotence than the Vietnam War and that the U.S. was indeed a “paper tiger.” China Daily ran a cartoon called “U.S. abandons Afghanistan!” depicting a Statue of Liberty-like plane in the air with people falling off.
With the Taliban taking over, Secretary of State Blinken called Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister, informing him of the developments in Afghanistan. Wang, however, took the opportunity to teach his counterpart, “…it is difficult to gain a foothold in a country with a completely different history, culture and national conditions by mechanically copying foreign models.”
For micro-bloggers on Weibo, the chaotic and tragic images from the Kabul airport gave them yet another chance, far grander than any before, to taunt the U.S.
Little trumpet of masses: Taliban’s speed is beyond imagination! The U.S. is suffering an embarrassing end. Biden never could have expected this.
Sichuan Wei Jing: After the U.S. abandoning it, Afghan went through a rapid change of regime. This is not the first time the United States abandoned allies. 1975 in Saigon, 2019 in Syria, the U.S. did the same things.
Be first at scene of event: Biden finally admitted the U.S. failure in Afghanistan. Blinken called China overnight, asking China to act.
Shepherd of cute pets: Taliban took large number of cities one after another. Afghan is back to square one. Thousands of American soldiers died in vain.
Sister at one meter and half: Afghan changed overnight. With the U.S. unable to even help itself, Biden’s plan to counter China full force has failed.
wu2198: Americans are No. 1 in fleeing!
Roaming pig 5210: For a total of 20 years, the U.S. spent trillions of dollars making a copy of itself and propping up a democratic government in Afghanistan. Yet it was so corrupt that it lost all popular support and turned into a pile of garbage, unable to withstand a single blow.
A fool who knows nothing: U.S. in 2001: “We will rebuild Afghanistan.” In 2021: “The U.S. never promised to rebuild Afghanistan.” Forgot already over the years?
Dry port peace: Saigon retreat is a bit old now and many have forgot it. But the great Kabul retreat took place only yesterday. The whole world is watching. Those traitors in Hong Kong and Taiwan may still say a few hard words, but inside they must feel very cold.
Senior Shi Wei: There are many levels to read into the Afghan story. From our point of view in mainland China, it is of course the ancient saying that “American imperialists and all reactionaries are paper tigers.” For Taiwan, the situation is becoming really ironic. The United States is never a reliable sugar daddy. When its interests are no longer guaranteed, it will abandon its pawns mercilessly.
Toffee melting under sun: The good news the author of The Kite Runner has been waiting for is totally shattered.
Gunara the god of inky dark: So lucky to have been born in China. Will love our motherland forever.
Charging bugle: America’s failure in Afghanistan will change the geopolitical map in Middle East and Central Asia. There won’t be an inch of land in Central Asia for the United States to return to when and if it wants to.
Ericzzzzzr: Afghanistan did not have a serious political structure up or down. The puppet government and the crony regime ran the country with a mindset of making a quick buck, without any sense of state and national responsibility. They knew they were running dogs of imperialists and tried their best to pocket money. As soon as trouble started, they ran, and let their American daddy to clean up the mess. Biden is no fool, not playing anymore.
@mystery bunny girl: To overthrow the Taliban, the Afghan war lasted 20 years, resulting in over 100,000 deaths of ordinary Afghan people, over 60,000 deaths of Afghan security forces, and over 4 million Afghans homeless. The result was the return of the Taliban, taking back Afghanistan. The only thing that could be said is that this war has been meaningless. Even if the Eagle achieved a strategic goal for a short while, it lost it in the end.
Babble babble chubby: Watched the hot search news and saw so many people running after the American plane, even falling off the plane in midair. So many innocent lives… hard to bear to look. Hope there is no war in the world, only peace, in every corner of the globe.
Han Dongyan: The most affected by this withdrawal of U.S. military is not the U.S., not the world, not even Afghanistan, but Taiwan. The United States ran Afghan for 20 years, spent 2 trillion dollars, supplied troops, money, and policies. In the end, it still failed. Think about it. What has the U.S. given Taiwan? Only rubber checks. So, people of Taiwan can now understand that rubber checks are just empty words, no use.
-LIZHIMENG: The honor of the U.S. is now shattered all over the floor. It is not hard to imagine that Afghan traitors’ today is the tomorrow of Taiwan independence. Such tragic fate is not at all hard to predict.
I really like meals: Those people on Taiwan, after watching this news, do you still believe your American daddy will protect you?
Taotao run: There is no future for Taiwan independence. Brothers, look at this as an example. When the situation is no longer beneficial, Americans run faster than dogs.
Yi Kelun viewing world: It seems that even though Biden looks like he has Alzheimer’s symptoms, he is still a little more honest than Trump. He at least has the courage to admit failure. I think, from now on, the United States is beginning to gradually come to an end, ending with these two fogies. As I said, one cannot last too long just being tough. Dry tree branches are stiff, but they are already dead. In the natural world, where is there anything that changes from soft to hard that does not mean death?
Adelaide Dede: Comparing the two, the Afghan retreat is the same as the Saigon retreat. Local forces trained by Americans did not put up any resistance. The modern U.S. lacks a general like MacArthur.
Trees wake up birds: U.S. hegemony is collapsing sooner than expected.
Xz of mandibular line: Amitabha. May our China become stronger and stronger. May our motherland prosper and prosper. May I still be Chinese in my next life.
HK one mind association: Bye! Done!
