With the Chinese shooter Yang Qian winning the first gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics in the women’s air rifle 10m competition, and with Team China leading in gold medals for two weeks, Chinese netizens were on cloud nine. One Weibo blogger declared that China’s time as a sports empire had arrived. They had a good laugh at the U.S., especially at American medal listings sorted by total number of medals and/or by color of medals. In their mind, counting total medals in stead of gold medals simply showed the U.S. trying to appear to be number one when it was not.
